Matlock is the County Town of Derbyshire and the seat of local goverment, hosting the County, District (Derbyshire Dales District Council) and Matlock Town Council. It is smaller than most county towns (population of about 16,000, whereas there are eight other towns in Derbyshire with over 20,000) and is really a collection of smaller settlements spread along the Derwent Valley. The wider Matlock urban area (Matlock, Matlock Bath, Darley Dale, Hackney and Tansley has about 20,000 inhabitants.
