New Long Distance Peak District Geotrail Starting in Matlock

A new 215 km (134 mile) long distance walking trail around the Peak District, but starting and finishing in Matlock has been launched. It links sites of special geological interest around the Peak District. The walk was devised by Albert Benghiat and Martin Whitely and is split into 14 sections. The website contains maps and full route directions, with explanation and pictures of the geological features encountered in each section. GPX route files can also be downloaded.

Hot Off the Press!

Matlock Civic Association (MCA) have just published their 3rd Walking Guide, “The Jitties of Matlock.”  It can be bought for £5.00 from 5 locations in Matlock and Cromford: Bridge News on Crown Square, Café in the Park in Hall Leys Park, Zinc Café on Bank Road, Cromford Mill Bookshop, and Countryside Books, both  at Cromford Mill.

The Jitties of Matlock

“Jitties”, “Snickets”, “Cuts”, “Ginnels”, “Twitchells”, “Alleys” – call them what you will, but we are blessed with a lot of them in Matlock. MCA has just published a 46 page booklet in full colour with maps and photographs to enable you to explore all of them. The A5 booklet guides pedestrians along 5 colour coded routes with accompanying maps, including a wheelchair route; it also contains a large pull-out map covering all the routes across Matlock (can be purchased separately from Bridge News, Café in the Park, or the Hurst Farm Social Club for £1 each).

Well-known aspects such as High Tor, Riber Castle, Hydrotherapy, and the former Cable Car are featured together with many less well-known topics such as Matlock’s role in the World Wars, Lead Mining and Quarrying, the Derwent Valley Aqueduct, and even a Chamber Pot Murder. We hope there is something of interest for everyone! (See a sample page below)

In addition, copies of the two booklets published earlier by MCA are still available (see below)

These booklets also include detailed maps, illustrations, historical information and walking guidance. Trails 1-4 were developed by Peter Wild of MCA and cover Old Matlock and the many hydros in the town.
